6 Tips for Singers Who Struggle with Imposter Syndrome

Tips to Help Singers Manage Self Doubt

Imposter syndrome is a common issue that all singers face, at one time or another. It’s that feeling of self doubt, regardless of your experience level, and even when you have achieved success and recognition as a singer. If you're a singer struggling with imposter syndrome, here are some tips to help you manage and overcome those unhelpful voices:

1. Recognize Your Achievements

Take the time to acknowledge your accomplishments and recognize your handwork and talent. Celebrate successes, no matter how small they may seem, and remember that they are evidence of your abilities.

2. Challenge Your Negative Thoughts

When you experience self doubt, challenge those negative thoughts by asking yourself if they are based in reality or if they are based in fear. Use positive affirmations to counteract negative thoughts and replace them with self-encouragement.

3. Set Realistic Goals

Setting realistic goals can help you avoid feelings of failure or inadequacy. Break down long-term goals into smaller, achievable milestones and then celebrate each milestone along the way.

4. Surround Yourself With Supportive People

Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your goals and dreams. Seek out constructive feedback form supportive friends, family or a trusted voice coach.

5. Practice Self-Care

Prioritize taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Get enough rest, eat healthy, exercise and engage in activities that bring you joy.

6. Focus on Your Why

Focus on the music and remember why you became a singer in the first place - because you love music. Turn your focus on the joy and passion you feel when singing, rather than the pressure to succeed.

Imposter syndrome is a common issue that all singers will face but it doesn’t have to control you and your career. Remember that you are talented, capable and deserving of success and keep pursuing your passion.
