Discover Your Best Singing Voice with Sounds You Already Know

Using Simple Sounds for Powerful Singing

Discover Your Best Singing Voice With the Sounds You Already Know How to Make!

I've always been a big believer in using sounds you already know how to make to build your best singing voice. You might be surprised at how much you can do with the voice you already have – it’s just about tapping into what you know. I promise you, you can do more than you think!

Finding Your Low Register

Your low register, or chest voice, is super connected to your speaking voice. Here’s a fun way to tap into it:

  1. Speak: Start by just talking in your normal voice
  2. Call Out: Imagine calling out to a friend across the room – "Hey!" Notice how your voice feels.
  3. Add Pitches: Now, let’s add some pitches. Try singing "Hey-hey-hey" on a 1-5-1 pattern with the same energy.

And there you go! Those are your low notes, rooted right in your natural speech.

Discovering Your High Notes

Finding your high notes can be much easier than you think and much more fun. Let's play a little!

  1. Kiddo on a Swing: Remember the sound a child makes on a swing – "Wheee!" This is a great way to access your upper register.
  2. Siren Sound: Mimic a siren, like a fire truck or police car – "Wooooo!"

These playful sounds help you find your "head voice". You might not be comfortable staying in this range yet, but these exercises show you have the tools to start developing this part of your voice.

Finding Your Mix Voice

That elusive "mix" voice? It’s easier to find than you think:

  1. Meow Like a Cat: Try mimicking a cat’s meow.
  2. Cackle Like a Witch: Think of a classic witch’s cackle.
  3. Cry Like a Baby: Make the sound of a baby crying.
  4. Add Pitches: Now, take the sound that feels best and take it into a 5 note scale

You’ve got it! These sounds are the beginning of your mix voice that you can explore and develop.

Want to Belt?

As scary as it seems, belting can be as simple as calling out to a parent:

  1. Call Out: Imagine calling out to your mom or dad – "Mom!" or "Dad!"
  2. Add Pitches: Now, add some pitches. Sing "Mom!" or "Dad!" on a 5-1 pattern.

There you go – that’s your belt!

Why This Approach Works

This approach works because it builds on sounds you’re already comfortable with. You don’t have to learn new techniques from scratch – you’re just refining and expanding what you naturally do. This makes learning easier and boosts your confidence.
